Telluride Opens Revelation Bowl

Telluride has never been a mountain short on variety. It has long been an ideal destination for families toting skiers and riders of all ages and abilities. With long cruisers, terrain parks, bump runs, and the steep chutes of Gold Hill for the more fearless, Telluride offers an incredibly wide variety of terrain.
However, Telluride’s latest addition, its first lift-served expansion since 2001, has put it on the short list of elite destinations for big-mountain skiing. The Revelation Bowl, Telluride’s first lift accessed bowl, brings an entirely new dimension to an already world class mountain. The 50-acre high-alpine bowl sits on the northeast face of the mountain and is a magnet for snow blown off the adjacent Gold Hill, making Revelation a new priority on powder days.
Skiers can make laps on the Revelation high-speed quad, which rises to a blood-thinning 12,670 feet. With stunning views of the San Juan mountain range that are second to none, I am hard pressed to think of another mountain on this continent that can match the experience of Telluride’s Revelation Bowl. – Alex Hayes

Sex sells.

At least that’s the word from an Atlantic City hotel that recently started selling $18 Passion Kits. They’ve sold more than 1800 kits that include condoms and other intimate products since the end of June. The introduction of such personal items is one of the edgier trends to make its way into the hotel industry’s guest service program.

I’ve yet to stay in a hotel that offered this grown up amenity. The New Jersey hotel discourages checking in with kids but promises to remove the passion kits with advance notice.

However, if you check into a hotel WITH your kids and don’t know there is a passion kit in the room, you could be faced with a dilemma. I guess one option would be to use the potential discovery and questions as a teaching opportunity!

I think I will have to confer with my fellow blogger, Andrea Frazer over at My So Called Sex Life and see how she would handle the situation. After all, she’s the expert on this topic.

I just need to find a way to turn it into an adventure.

“Here baby. Here baby.” I called tentatively to the adorable, brown and white calf whose mother is unable to feed her. An infection means someone must feed this young creature twice each day. I am an eager volunteer.

I was soon to learn that Mom The Cow may not be able to provide milk to her calf at the moment, but she is not short on the instinct to provide protection.

She stood behind her baby, sizing up the human holding the large bottle, full of warm sustenance, intended for her wobbly, young one.

The Travel Industry Association reports that more than 35% of travelers said they were currently interested in traveling to places that cater to children. Among those who are interested, the majority (51%) are 18 – 34 years old, presumably young families with young children. Nearly one in five travelers (18%) said they were MORE interested now compared to five years ago in traveling to places that cater to the junior globe-trotting set.

George Wendt is one of only four recipients to be awarded the Lifetime Achievement award by the Adventure Travel Trade Association. The award honors Wendt’s dedication to 37 years of pioneering excellence in the realms of whitewater rafting, ecotourism, and adventure travel.
Wendt realized his dream of rafting for life after being one of the first 1000 to raft the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. During a recent meeting of adventure travel professionals and enthusiasts, I had the pleasure of hearing Wade Davis, National Geographic Explorer in Residence, deliver a most extraordinary lecture. Goldwater on Goldwater

In 1993 I had the extreme good fortune to be invited by my good friend CC Goldwater to accompany her extended family on an eight day trip through the famed Colorado whitewater, deep within the Grand Canyon. Her grandfather, Barry Goldwater, would join the trip. He was an early explorer of the Canyon and his tales of whitewater ( and Watergate ) spellbound us all. This American icon was well known for his bold political stands, but few people outside his home state are aware of his extraordinary photography, extensive knowledge of geology, American Indian culture and so much more. Until now.

CC Goldwater has produced a magnificent and very touching documentary about her grandfather, providing a wonderful glimpse into the life, work and passion of this extraordinary man. It will be on HBO through mid October. I hope you will tune in.

On Hold

Travel is complicated these days. I have been "on hold" in the Newark airport for several hours.
First, a weather delay. Then just when things were looking good, a mechanical delay. It is Friday evening and everyone is tired. Many are vying for available electrical outlets to stay connected. Nearby, a father is watching a dvd with his young daughter on his laptop. She looks relaxed. Small purple crocs removed, she's curled on the seat. Dad is tense, brow furrowed. They have just announced another two hour delay. An airplane part is enroute from JFK. Breathe. Patience.

I have been reading about the world's nine million refugee children and the role sports plays in their ability to make it in the larger world beyond the camps. Among the organizations making a difference is NineMillion.org as well as others. One example, Right To Play is an athlete-driven international humanitarian organization that uses sport and play as a tool for the development of children and youth in the most disadvantaged areas of the world.

Wind River Range

Today, my youngest son Ted begins a grand 30-day, back country adventure in Wyoming's Wind River Range. I deposited him ( I admit, I got misty-eyed ) with the outdoor professionals from NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School ) in the western Wyoming town of Lander. It is from this outpost that NOLS students travel into the adjacent remote mountain range to learn leadership, mountaineering, horsepacking, and rock climbing skills. The rugged landscape is filled with high granite peaks, mountain lakes ideal for fly fishing, and sub-alpine forests. The abundant high-altitude granite and permanent snow here make it a perfect setting for learning a range of skills. Experts suggest getting children involved in decisions

Sweaty limbs, back-seat battles, sandwiches smooshed in wax paper - ahh the family car trip! It's this and so much more.

Or less, if you play it right.
For most families, a road trip is a fact of life when the weather warms. And this year's trip is still on, despite high gasoline prices, according to Pam Moen of AAA Wisconsin.
"Their travel is important and a lot of families maybe plan one big trip a year," she says. "Everybody looks forward to that, and it's a big deal, and they're going to continue with those plans despite the higher gas prices."
In fact, a survey in January by the Travel Industry Association of America showed that 81% of Americans who were planning a summer trip had already started thinking about it in January.
And despite the price of gas, a car trip remains a very economical way to travel, according to Jamie Jensen, author of the "Road Trip" series of off-the-beaten-path car travel guides. The latest, "Road Trip USA" (Avalon Travel Publishing, $25), came out at the end of April.
Gas prices have been going up for a while, he notes. "People got used to spending money," he said. "Now, it doesn't seem to be much of a factor. It's still a pretty efficient way to get around."

If the budget gets tight, families change the destination to someplace closer to home, packing more lunches and scoping out better deals in hotels.

"It's about families being together and creating memories," Moen said. "And people find a way to do that."

Toddler Travel

This morning I did an interview with ABC 15 in Phoenix about cool things you can do with your toddlers. Traveling with young children can be challenging. But in the end it makes for mostly wonderful memories.

One tip: Yes we need to bring a change of clothes for the wee ones. But it never hurts to carry our own extra ensemble. I was reminded this morning of the trip I took many years ago when my son Ben was a toddler. He got sick just as we were boarding our flight. I had a change of clothing for him. But not for myself. We were not a popular pair on board the cross-country flight!
